At Home

Here are some activities to do at home anytime, especially during the summer and school vacations:

  • Look for letters all around you, in your home and outside in the world.  Search for upper and lowercase letters, too.
  • Find words all around you.  See if you can find the same word in different places.
  • Find the letters in your name around your house, in the grocery store or on signs you see when driving with a grown-up in a car.
  • Go on a number, color or shape hunt just like the letter search.  Find two or three of the same number.
  • Write numbers or letters in dirt, sand or shaving cream spread out in a dish.
  • Count numbers in order to 10, then 20 then 30.
  • Go on a nature walk and listen for different bird songs.
  • Collect rocks in different shapes, sizes and colors.
  • Find different kinds of pine cones.
  • Collect leaves from different trees.  Compare their size, number of points and the design of each leaf.
  • Move large rocks and see if you can find a worm or insect that lives underneath.
  • Collect something from outside (pebbles, blades of grass, sticks) to count to 10, 20 and 30.
  • Find a sugar maple tree.  It's leaves have five main points.
  • Find an evergreen tree.  It has pine needles and can grow pine cones.
  • Collect recycled items (paper rolls, cereal boxes, etc. but no glass).  Glue them together to make a creature, machine or musical instrument.
  • Sing songs with a grown-up or friend.
  • Run, jump, hop and play catch with a ball.
  • Go to the playground at Porters Point School!
